FACTORY AMP BYPASS
About ten years ago, I took out the dial style radio and factory amp, and bypassed some of the wires to hook up a newer radio. There weren't any plug in wire harness that I could find for my model year so I spliced the wiring.
The whole dash was taken apart and out while installing the new AC system. In the new maze of wiring, hoses and ducting, the front speaker terminals got lost somewhere in the dash. I ended up rechecking all my previous connections and then tracing the wires back so I would at least know what color wires to look for.
Sure enough, the new harness was spliced correctly and I finally found the speaker terminals. I hope to never have to do this again, but just in case, here is my color coding partly from Ford wiring diagrams:

*There are multiple harness for the radio amp system. I can't remember exactly which ones I completely unplugged and removed. Rather than figure it all out, because it really doesn't matter, one of the harness had an intermediate color on a Ford harness before switching back to what the color should be. Also it looks like the front speakers originally shared an un-amplified common ground. I did not use this setup, so all grounds are independent. For this reason, I traced the terminals at the speaker back to the harness at the radio and used that color. I don't care what the wire used to be used for, but it runs to the correct speaker and is hooked up correctly to the new radio.
I am not sure if this is a Ford convention or what I did, but I noticed that my positive speaker terminals have a dot or hash, and the negative terminal is striped. (Except for what used to be the shared ground)
This is the advantage to keeping track of things online: Since I still have to fix some other wiring and reassemble some dash parts, I can access this page from my phone and I don't have to mess with turning pages in a manual when I reconnect everything!
